Sheep and Goat Identification

The National Scrapie Eradication Program, led by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), is offering a valuable opportunity for newcomers to the sheep and goat identification program. Until the conclusion of fiscal year (FY) 2021 or until funds are depleted, APHIS is providing up to 100 plastic flock ID tags at no cost to eligible participants. However, producers will need to purchase the compatible applicator directly from the tag manufacturer. Recognizing the importance of enhanced traceability, APHIS is collaborating with sheep and goat organizations to devise a plan that embraces electronic identification. This transition aims to bolster our nation’s capacity to swiftly track exposed and diseased animals in the event of an outbreak, ultimately strengthening the overall disease control measures.
